Cat training aids are essential to training a cat. When you begin cat training sessions with your cat, you want the cat to be focused. That is why the cat training aids and instruments you use to handle the training session are important to make it easier for you and your cat.

If you are thinking of training your cat, you should start off with target training. The target can be any kind of wand, I use Karen Pryor's extension wand that came with her cat training starter kit.

Target training serves as an introduction of how your cat training game will be played. I won't go into detail here but essentially you are going to teach your cat to follow this target with positive reinforcement, that uses cat training aids combining a treat with a 'click'.

The 'click' is this button that literally makes a click sound (you can hear it in one of my cat training videos). We use this sound to communicate to our cat that he/she is doing good. The timing of the 'click' is very important, and has to be done during the good action or behavior, for more details on the clicker please read my page about cat clicker training.

So we have a target and a clicker, now we need treats and a clean way to handle them. The treats you use will depend on your cats taste, of course you'll get the best response with a treat they go wild for.

Personally I work with two cats - Sammi and Isla. Sammi will eat almost anything so it's not hard to find a treat for this guy, but Isla is much pickier... especially if you want her to do something for it. When I found what she goes wild for, it wasn't even cat food.

It was my favorite microwavable fish that I eat! So all I had to do was microwave it for 5 minutes, slice it up to little pieces and then reuse the fish for at least 3 days kept in the fridge.

I prefer using this over any wet food for cats because it's less messy and at the same time - you are giving your cat straight fish meat packed with protein and low in fat. This benefits your cats health and it's easy to clean.

All that is left is finding something to put the treats in and a spoon (if you don't want to use your hands). I use a disposable plastic spoon to handle the food, and for a plate I either use the cats regular food bowl or an extra plastic lid if I'm training both cats.

I'm thinking of getting it because I keep finding myself needing another hand, trying to handle the wand, clicker and treats all at the same time. I always hold the wand and clicker in the same hand anyways, so it's a great cat training aid idea to just have the 'click' built in to the target.
